I wrote a review last June about Scot McKnight’s book, Praying with the Church - my thoughts and experiences about fixed hour prayer in general can be found here.

As for this little book, it has become, as all of Tickle’s resources, a helpful and handy tool in developing and growing in the spiritual discipline of prayer.

First of all, this book is SMALL, really small. It reminds me a little bit of my Hebrew/English Psalter that I got in Jerusalem. The condensed size makes it convenient for when you’re on the go…which I almost always am.

And even though I would say this compilation of prayers and scripture is not meant to stand on it’s own, I think it would be a really good introduction to fixed hour prayer for anyone who finds the “big books” of prayer to be intimidating.

If you have never tried fixed hour prayer but have thought about it, get this book and try it for several cycles (the book covers a week of praying 7 times daily) - you might find that it’s not for you but you never know if you don’t try.

I personally use fixed hour prayer as a “launch pad” of sorts into spontaneous prayers as well as an act of discipline to quiet myself down and slow down my day which tends to move far too fast.
