Zehnder: Going Up, a review

I should have blogged about this album that was generously given to me long ago but honestly, I have no idea how to review music…I listen to music I like and I like music for it’s particular style and/or the way it makes me feel and the depth of the lyrics and that’s really all I can say about it. I can review the skill of a saxophonist because I play saxophone, I can review jazz because I played jazz…beyond that, I feel like I don’t have much to say beyond - thumbs up or thumbs down based on my own personal taste…which I feel does a disservice to the artists.

But I’ll give it a go.

I’m not very keen on the “island feel” style of this album…maybe because it reminds me of a VBS theme I volunteered for one summer. It feels childish to my sensibilities, which might not really be a fair assessment because, truth be told, I don’t know much about reggae, latin or soul (which is the flavors Mike discussed in his review).

I did enjoy most of the lyrics - they were, by and large, accessible and worshipful. I think many of these songs could be “restyled” to suit individual congregations/communities and be used in their worship time. It’s not really something I would personally listen to as-is but I could see using some of the songs as prayers, confessions or retooled worship songs.

The musicians seem quite skilled and I wanted to like this album for no other reason but to be able to recommend some new Christian music to the scene but all in all, I wasn’t thrilled.

The 3 songs I’d add to my ipod playlist would be

What Wondrous Love is This
Drum Invitation
I Believe

Those 3 don’t have as much of the island feel and the drum invitation has a great vibe to it.
