Blog Action Day - The Environment

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

I was excited when I saw that this blog action day is about the environment - and then I realized I’m not really sure I have anything to say. It still baffles me that this issue is something that people don’t take seriously enough to make life changes for.

So I will simply encourage you to think about this issue…seriously. Let thoughts of the environment worm into your brain and wriggle around for awhile. Talk to someone about your fears, your doubts, your insights. If you haven’t already taken steps to help the earth, think honestly about why. If you have, think honestly about what you can do next.

The last thing I want is for this issue to become yet another law, another thing some of us do to feel good about ourselves, another issue of self righteousness. So all I ask is to take this issue and sit with it awhile, taking pause to wrestle with it, pray, ask the Spirit to speak to your heart about His desires…and then step out in obedience however that looks.

The matter of the environment is complex. There are no quick fixes, no one size fits all answers and the only way we fail to be good stewards of God’s creation is to mindlessly ignore it and keep going on with our lives.

here are some things to think about:

1. space - how much of the land do you need to live on and are you making the best use of the land you are living on?
2. food - is your diet negatively affecting the earth?
3. recycling - are you recycling? if not should you be? if so, can you be doing more?
4. energy - is your home as energy efficient as it could be?
5. transportation - how do you get around? could you be traveling differently in a way that is more earth friendly?
6. purchasing power - when you DO need to buy things, where do you shop? who do you buy from? is it important?

I’m convinced that as Christians we need to be living well in all domains of life. Would it be so bad if we included our impact on the others of God’s creation? The land and water, the animals, climate, plants, etc.

I am always surprised when environmentalism is not only ignored by evangelicals, but is opposed by them (again, too close of ties b/t republicans and American Christianity). The fact that America consumes 43 percent of the world’s resources while only making up 6 percent of the world’s population is a gross display of greed, waste, and total disregard for the billions that have next to nothing. I wish people would view environmentalism as not only caring for God’s precious creation, but as a means to love our neighbors as ourselves more completely.
