This is a fanstastic commentary on breastfeeding in public and esp. on our overly sexed culture. What I was thinking of the most from this was the reality of the situation and our ability to change it. If other cultures can “tolerate” and even *gasp* celebrate a woman nurturing her baby at the breast in full view of everyone without lust factoring into the equation then we as humans and esp. as Christians imbued with the power of the Holy Spirit, can overcome our own lustful impulses that have been societally conditioned in order to have cross gender friendships, healthy relationships outside of the Christian bubble, etc.

    Thanks for sharing! That article was very interesting and thought-provoking! It was strange that people would be offended by women using their breasts for their intended purpose. “Sexually Wounded” is a very accurate description of our culture!

    thanks Mak, interestingly enough there are proposals being considered in the UK to make it illegal to not let a woman breastfeed in public.

    At which point i’ll stop before my impure mind kicks in ;)

    My father in law used to ask me to leave the room (”wouldn’t you be more comfortable doing that in private?”) when I fed the boys - even though I was completely discreet, he simply could not be OK with it because it had never been done in his family.

    Incidentally I always politely refused to go to “another room”, and my husband backed me up.

    Thanks for bringing our attention to this, I rarely breastfeed in public (outside of a car or restroom) because of this. I don’t want to offend or trouble anyone. I have actually been asked of someone to leave the room while breastfeeding in my own house! I hope that someday in our society it will be realised what a natural, healthy, and positive act breastfeeding is.

    well you know how I feel about offending people ;) hehe…the thing I feel about breasfeeding is that if a woman WANTS to leave, then she has that freedom but that a woman shouldn’t feel compelled or pressured to leave….or even “cover up” for that matter. I’ve watched myself in a mirror just to see if anything shows…it doesn’t. Besides, I don’t make slurpers in a restaurant go eat in the bathroom because they’re bothering me
