East v. West ideas about sin
Western theology has tended to see sin and evil primarily as something God punishes us for; Orthodox theology has tended to see sin and evil primarily as something God rescues us from.
I think this is an accurate comparison of east vs. west views of sin. It goes along with atonement theology as well I think. In my reading of Eastern Orthodox theology, it seems as though there is more emphasis placed on God as physician than there is on God as judge. Which, if you think about it, is a paradigm that infiltrates every area of our lives, including how we treat one another.
